  • Currently being fostered in Port Stanley, Ontario

Nova's Ideal Home
  • Experienced Vizsla or sporting dog owners who are willing to work on building Nova's confidence and meeting new dogs and people and having her nails done

  • Daily exercise

  • NO babies or young children

  • Quiet, adult-only home; ideally only 1-2 adults in the home

  • Although she has 'bossed' the fosters' 2 other younger Vizslas, she did live with another dog - a Dachshund.  In the second foster home, she enjoys being with a smaller dog.  So we will consider adopting her to a home with other dogs but another Vizsla or similar-sized or larger dog could be an issue.

What We Know / Have Learned About Nova

Nova was purchased by the owners for their daughter.  They fell on very difficult financial times, relocated, daughter went to University, and the parents had no interest in her.  Nova was relinquished to the VSO in September 2025, and has been fostered by very experienced VSO members / Vizsla owners since then.   They feel she is ready to be adopted.

Nova is a sweet and loving dog.  She needs a home with a calm and quiet environment (an individual or couple but no children or plans for children).  Nova is an avid squirrel/rabbit/small, moving animal hunter. Nova also needs a human(s) who willing commit to be loving, positive and patient and willing to invest time into the long process of helping her learn that vet visits don’t need to be terrifying and grooming/nails can be done in calm and caring ways - at Nova's pace.

Nova has demonstrated some anxiety about vet visits and getting nails trimmed.  The foster family is using cooperative care methods to reduce her apprehension but more work is needed.

It appears that Nova hasn’t had much exposure to or experience playing with bigger dogs although she spent time in her previous home with a Dachshund.  In the first foster, with two other Vizslas, a male and young female, she took the toys from the other dogs and if they tried to deny her the toy she would  escalate to a higher level of growling to get what she wanted.  Toys were removed from the dogs’ reach for the interim.  In the second foster home, she gets along well with the Bichon frise.

Nova was taught not to go on furniture or beds by her first owners, unless her blanket is placed on the furniture.  She is crate trained and sleeps in her crate at night and when the fosters go out.

She has not displayed any resource guarding with treats around other dogs in the house.  She does seem to attach more quickly to men than women.
