What We Know / Have Learned About Gus

Gus was bred by Onpoint kennels.  Gus has had two owners; the 'current' owner got him when he was 15 months old and had him until the present.  The current owner placed him in a boarding kennel and then announced he didn't want Gus any more, so effectively abandoned him.  The VSO was contacted and after one month in kennels where he appeared to be very anxious, we were finally able to get Gus released into our care and rehoming program.  We don't know the specifics behind the reason to abandon Gus but there were hints of the owner's illness, possibly physical or mental; we are not sure.

It turns out, however, that Gus a sweet and loving dog - he loves to give slobbery kisses! - and has a ton of energy - he comes from hunting lines.  He badly needs training, especially RECALL training, and he needs a 'job'.  "You can take the dog out of the hunt, but you can't take the hunt out of the dog."

 

We are still assessing Gus' personality and behaviour but we feel he will make a wonderful companion, as long as the new family is prepared for a high energy dog and will take lots of time to train Gus's recall which is almost non-existent. Right now, he cannot be trusted off leash in an open, unfenced area.  He loves people and can often jump up on them in his excitement. He's interested in other dogs but not terribly interested in playing with them.

When we picked Gus up from the Board Kennel, he was very thin and his vet records showed gradual and continued weight loss over the past few years.  The owner had never brought in a fecal sample for testing or had bloodwork done. We did, and learned that Gus has Giardia, an intestinal parasitic infection that commonly causes soft or watery diarrhea. He's currently on Panacur (Fenbendazole) and has already shown signs of improvement!

We don't know how long Gus has had Giardia and that might explain his weight loss.  Since he is currently malnourished, he's on a prescription diet along with probiotics and being given small meals a few times a day to help him absorb nutrients.
