VSO Field Test Fall 2012

Saturday, Sep 15 - Sunday, Sep 16

Field Tests are a great way to interact with your dog in the environment for which he or she was bred. It can also be great day to just come out and watch the dogs run and get to know other Vizsla addicts!

There are three different levels to achieve. At each level, you and your dog are graded by a judge who accompanies you for a short walk (20 minutes) through some bush or field and then into an area where game birds have been planted for your dog to find. While expectations differ at each level dogs are judged on areas such as: desire to hunt, style of running, pace, range, pattern, control, pointing, reaction to shot and retrieve.

To pass a level a dog must pass three times with at least two different judges.

FDX usually runs first thing in the morning, followed by FD and then Junior in the afternoon.

Field Dog Junior (FDJ)

This is the beginner level. Most dogs just need a little exposure to birds and then they figure out what they're supposed to do: POINT! You can use the test as the first introduction or visit a trainer. The main requirement at this level is that your dog must find a bird and point for approximately 8 seconds. You'll also need to fire a blank pistol so your dog can be judged on 'reaction to shot'. (There's lots of friendly dog owners that can lend you a pistol!)

FDJ is a lot of fun to watch. It's cool to see the young dogs get excited about using the instincts they were born with.

Field Dog (FD)

At the Field Dog level everything gets a little more serious. Dogs are required to hold their point until the shot is fired. AND, must retrieve the bird to hand while the handler cannot move more than one step.

Field Dog Excellent (FDX)

It get's even more complicated with Field Dog Excellent. Dogs are run in pairs (a brace) and must now "honour" the other dogs point. This can be difficult at times and lots can go wrong. Any dog with an FDX is quite the hunter.
Helping out!

Field tests depend on members volunteering to help. It's a great way to get involved. Activities range from... setting up/tearing down, picking up and bringing food and bird planting.
