Tibor Reiter Award
Vizslas are a very high energy breed with exceptional intelligence bred by the Hungarians to be an all-round hunting and family dog. With these genes in its makeup, a Vizsla can turn to destruction if it’s not given a “job” and adequate daily exercise. As a result, most Vizsla owners have learned – sometimes the hard way – that a Vizsla needs to be kept busy. And that’s what many propels many owners to ‘get involved’ with their dogs. Little do we know where that phase “get involved” will lead us one day . . .
South of the border, it has been the Vizsla setting records in the American Kennel Club by becoming the first Triple Champion on record, then the first Quadruple Champion and then most recently, the first Quintuple Champion in history. No other breed has come close to this stellar level of accomplishment. And so over the years, thanks to the Hungarians who concentrated on breeding for a dog that could perform a number of behaviours, and owners who have continued to push the boundaries of what the Vizsla can be trained to perform, our breed has become aptly labelled “the versatile Vizsla’ for its ability to achieve and excel in a variety of disciplines.
Thirty years ago, the Vizsla Society of Ontario established an award to recognize one Vizsla annually that overall demonstrated the highest level of versatility in a number of different sports. The trophy was donated by a gentleman named Tibor Reiter, so named in his honor, and it was first awarded in 1980. This award is intended to encourage Vizsla owners to “get involved” (there’s that phrase again!) in the many activities that Vizslas can undertake, and to reward Vizslas that perform and excel in multiple disciplines.
Vizslas that have accrued the many titles required to be eligible for this trophy are the products of both good breeding and a significant amount of time and effort (and usually money too) on the parts of their owners. The dedication and hard work of these owners should be celebrated as much as the accomplishment of their Vizslas, and each Vizsla nominated is a testament to this dedication. The Vizsla Society of Ontario salutes the 2009 Tibor Rieter trophy recipient, BPIS Am/The Vizsla Society of Ontario offers a special award for vizslas that exhibit versatility: the Tibor Reiter Award.
The Tibor Reiter Award
The Tibor Reiter Award is intended to encourage vizsla owners to get involved in the many activities that vizslas can undertake. Eligible vizslas must have a title in three areas, two of which must be Conformation and Field. Please see the Application Form for the other eligible areas. Each year the VSO board selects one winning vizsla from all that apply for that calendar year. Cumulative accomplishments over the vizslas life are all included in the evaluation. A vizsla can only win this award once. Application forms can be downloaded below. (The form has editable fields so you can fill it out using your computer, resave (you may have to 'save as') and forward electronically, assuming your other documentation is digital, too.
Eligibility: The Applicant must be a full member in good standing of the Vizsla Society of Ontario.
Completed forms should be sent via mail or email to the VSO Secretary:
